Virginia has passed that 18 and under that drive and use cell phones are breaking the law. Son (19) and I agree that this law should apply to all peopele. I have had too many near misses with people on cell phones. I personally do not use cell while driving. New York has already passed this law. What say the rest of the states?

I THINK IT SHOULD BE THE LAW IN EVERY STATE ALSO. IF MY CELL RINGS AND I’M DRIVING I DO NOT ANSWER IT UNTIL I GET TO MY DESTINATION. IF EVERYONE HAD DID THAT IT WOULDN’T BE SO MUCH WRECKS NOR DEATHS. CELL PHONES USER THAT TALK WHILE DRIVING, DRUNK DRIVERS AND UNSAFE DRIVERS SHOULD BE BANNED FROM DRIVING AT ALL.
I live in NY and even though there is a law well, not everyone obeys….YES, it is too dangerous to drive while using a cell phone and sometimes it’s dangerous with a hands free device…very distracting….
Yes,there should be a law for everyone.
I don’t understand why more people don’t use hands-free devices like ear buds. They make it a lot safer. Maybe that should be the law.
I think it should be a law to not be alble to use cell phones becuz while talking onur cell while driving can cause accidents!
There is but no one enforces it
I live in Maryland and I heard they passed something like this last year but I don’t think they enforce it. I think cell phones are a distraction for drivers, especially young ones, just as much as putting on make-up, changing a CD, lighting a cigarette, doing a crossword puzzle on the steering wheel, reading a novel, or peeling a banana…all of which I’ve seen while driving the Capitol Beltway on my way to work. When it comes to cell phones, I’m just as guilty as the next person. I feel I’m responsible about it but I can’t speak for everyone else. YES it is dangerous, but law or no law it will continue.
And hands-free devices do not help. It’s not about where your hands are, it’s about where your mind is. If you’re on the phone you’re not focused on what’s going on around you.
End result = you rear-end someone and MY CAR INSURANCE GOES UP!!
Some people just can’t drive no matter what age they are. I don’t think it should be illegal if you use a hands free device though.
Yes.
I hate cell phones in general anyway!
I really think cell phones should be outlawed when driving. I am annoyed when a car is in front of me going either so slow (in the fast lane) or weaving back and forth and you pass them and they are on a cell phone. I feel cell phones distract people when driving. I have a cell phone but I do not use it while driving. I love my life and wouldn’t want to end it by answer a cell phone.
I saw this report, on CNN I think, that when you use a cell phone while driving, your driving is impaired as much as it is if you been drinking.
I don’t know what the rest of the states say. This monkey says it should be banned completly.
i think so
They should at least require hands-free devices.
it distracts ppl but it should apply to all people
I think there should be a law in place regarding cell phones and driving. I can understand if the person is reporting an emergency to the local authorities, but carrying on a casual conversation should be done somewhere else. It’s like the bumper sticker says “Get Off Your Phone And Watch The Road!”
it is dangerous to drive while using a cellphone. it is illegal too.
I think it should be banned for anybody to be talking on cell phones while driving. I don’t care how old you are. If it’s not important enough to pull to the side of the road to talk, than it’s not important.
I know its illegal in NY and NJ to be on a cell phone and drive (that goes for all ages), but no matter what state Im in if Im on the phone and driving I put the phone down.
yes.. many accidents happen here because of texting or calling via cellular phones…
The law in Britain, as in other countries, permits the use of cell ‘phones so long as they are not hand-held.
This is stupid and totally missing the point.
It’s the mental distraction of using the ‘phone which is dangerous. Drivers of any vehicle should be prohibited from using them at all.
Unfortunately, like much legislation, the laws are made by people who have no specialist knowledge of, or expertise in, the subject.
Well, I’m from Canada, and wher eI am righ tnow you only get in big crap if you’re on the phone and you get in an accident, then all the blame is on you. I think there should be a law. It’s a huge distraction, even if using the speaker phone. I was watching TV and they did a bunch of tests and the results showed that when 20 year olds were driving using a cellphone they were actaully driving like a 70-80 year old would. That’s bad.
Personally, I think that this is a good law. I stay in Florida and I believe that, the same law passed over here
It should definitely be outlawed for all ages. Driving may not always be the most interesting of activities, but it can be very dangerous. Choosing to distract yourself while driving is no better than getting behind the wheel while impaired.
The city of Chicago has a similar law now. I agree with the law because I have seen many accidents. One person that was driving a car was not paying attention because they were on the cell phone. I think its should be a law in all states since people drive in all the states. I don’t use my cell while I am driving. If its a true emergency than that’s understandable but in a true emergency most of us will pull over and stop driving.
it is definately not safe to do this. yes. there should be a law to prohibit this while driving in every state.
People driving while yapping away on their cell phones bug the hell out of me
well here in Oregon i dont think it is a law.. not yet at least, but i think there trying to make it a law or were. And i think it should be there are alot of sh*TTy drivers out there hand thme a cell phone adn watch out for yourlife!!
Absolutely. I’m from NY and I totally agree with the law. I MYSELF have swerved while dialing a number, or reaching to answer the phone. The conversations that I have are NEVER as serious as hitting another car, or a wall. While I’ve never had an accident, there is NO QUESTION that I could have, simply from being distracted…
I have even been so engrossed in a conversation, that I”ve missed my exit!!! So conversation period, on the phone, where the person you are talking to cannot SEE the road as you do, is an issue. There is no question in my midn that cell phones PERIOD, hands free or NOT, should be banned while driving. CALL WHEN YOU GET THERE!!! It’s just safer.
It’s unsafe if you’re holding the device because you won’t react properly on a certain eventuality due to the fact that you would only have one hand free to maneuver. Oh … and of course it’s not really an age issue. They should modify that law.
YES! Cell phone use distracts the driver, opening him/her up to accidents. Nothing is so important that it cant wait until you get home, or at least pull over. There should be a law against it.
Effective July 1, 2004, motorists in New Jersey may NOT use a
hand-held wireless telephone while driving a motor vehicle on any
public road or highway. However, motorists may use a hands-free
wireless telephone if it does not interfere with any federally required
safety equipment or with the safe operation of the vehicle.
A hand-held wireless telephone may be used only in certain instances,
which include:
For safety reasons or to report a criminal act, and to report
• fire
• traffic accident
• serious road hazard
• medical emergency
• hazardous material emergency
Motorists in the above-mentioned circumstances must keep one hand
on the steering wheel while using a hand-held cellular telephone.
To prove the legal use of a hand-held cellular telephone while operating
a motor vehicle, a motorist may be asked to produce testimony
or written statements from appropriate authorities, or telephone
records.
The fine for breaking this law is between $100 and $250.
